The Reach Out and Read program at The Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is designed to encourage a lifelong love of reading among young patients and to help them develop early literacy skills. Through the program Hassenfeld patients between the ages of 6 months and 5 years of age meet with their doctor as part of their well-child visit at staged developmental milestones. During these visits Hassenfeld patients are given a book that is theirs to keep. Patients and parents receive reading encouragement from their doctor.
The Reach Out and Read program is organized through Hassenfeld’s Family Health Resource Center & Library. The collaborative help of Hassenfeld’s doctors and nurse practitioners, Greater New York Reach Out and Read, New York Public Library, volunteer readers, and the many generous donations of books sustain our program. The Hassenfeld Center became a Reach Out and Read Clinic in 2006.
